既往研究显示，糖尿病患者抑郁症的发生率较高，合并抑郁症的糖尿病患者的长期健康结局更差。一项最新研究表明，与单纯糖尿病患者相比，合并抑郁症的糖尿病患者血液中炎症标志物的水平更高，炎症可能是联系糖尿病与抑郁症的纽带。


研究者英国伦敦国王学院的Khalida Ismail及其同事对1227例新诊断的2型糖尿病患者的分析发现，与单纯糖尿病患者相比，合并抑郁症的糖尿病患者更年轻、体重更重、心血管疾病发病率更高，死亡率显著增加；血液中炎症标志物水平更高。进一步校正年龄、性别、体脂含量、他汀类药物应用等潜在混杂因素后，研究所评估的12种炎症标志物中仍有6种与抑郁症具有相关性。研究者认为，慢性低度炎症可损伤大脑、胰腺及血管系统，可能是糖尿病与抑郁症相关联的纽带。

南加州大学的Anne Peters评论认为，仍有待进一步探究“糖尿病、抑郁症及炎症标志物增高到底如何相互关联？”。虽然炎症在糖尿病患者抑郁症的发生发展过程中可能发挥了一定的作用，但肯定不是首要原因。因此，目前来说糖尿病患者治疗的关键仍是血糖控制，并积极采用健康生活方式，这些均有助于改善炎症状态，预防抑郁症的发生。
