特刊:Long-term effects of COVID-19 infections

期刊:BMC Infectious Diseases

客座编辑:Giulia Marchetti & Maria Mazzitelli

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Long-term effects of COVID-19 infections.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on global health, affecting millions of people and leading to widespread illness and death. While the acute phase of the pandemic has been well documented, there is growing recognition of the long-term effects of COVID-19, with many patients experiencing persistent symptoms even after resolution of the acute illness. This phenomenon, known as post-COVID syndrome, is increasingly recognized as a significant public health challenge. In recognition of the multidisciplinary approach needed to care for COVID-19 survivors, and the framework for identifying those at high risk for post-acute COVID-19, BMC Infectious Diseases welcomes submissions to its newly launched collection.

特刊:Advances in ocular imaging

期刊:BMC Ophthalmology

客座编辑:Reena Chopra, Carlo Cutolo, Bharat Gurnani, David M. Hinkle, Anna Marie Roszkowska & Xinyuan Zhang

Recent advancements in digital optical imaging technologies and processing algorithms have significantly improved the examination, diagnosis, and monitoring of eye diseases, and have facilitated the prediction of future disease outcomes.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and various retinal and choroidal diseases by enhancing our ability to accurately evaluate both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Further advances in OCT technology, such as swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) and SS-OCT angiography (OCTA), have significantly transformed patient care. In addition, the combination of anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) with other state-of-the-art imaging technologies, such as in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), has enabled earlier and more accurate diagnosis of ocular diseases, thereby contributing to our understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders. IVCM in particular can help diagnose and monitor the subbasal nerve plexus and is significantly important in the diagnosis and follow-up of peripheral small fiber polyneuropathies.

特刊:Transportation as a social determinant of health

期刊:BMC Public Health

客座编辑:David Ederer, Ipek N. Sener &  Owen Waygood

BMC Public Health is calling for submissions to our Collection on transportation as a social determinant of health.

Transportation is a critical social determinant that can have a significant impact on the physical and mental health, overall wellbeing of individuals and communities, and access to essential services such as healthcare and social services, educational and employment opportunities.

The lack of reliable and safe transportation options can hinder individuals’ ability to meet their basic needs.

There is a need for transportation and public health policies to implement interventions to overcome transportation barriers, improve existing infrastructures and promote the understanding of population health outcomes related to transport options.

特刊:Advancing oral health care for vulnerable patients

期刊:BMC Oral Health

客座编辑:Julia Csikar & Karen Vinall-Collier

BMC Oral Health is pleased to announce a new collection, Advancing oral health care for vulnerable patients, in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, disabled, and economically disadvantaged, often experience significant barriers to accessing oral health care. These patients are at increased risk for a range of oral health problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. Advances in oral health care have the potential to improve the quality of life and overall health outcomes for vulnerable patients.

特刊:Frailty in primary care

期刊:BMC Primary Care

客座编辑:Kristiana Ludlow, Natasha Reid, Oliver M Todd & Hakan Yaman

BMC Primary Care is calling for submissions to our Collection on Frailty in primary care.

Frailty is an age-related medical condition of reduced function and physiological reserve, that is of increased relevance in modern primary care due to the increased pace of population ageing. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) report that the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will double by 2050. Furthermore, in 2050, 80% of older people will live in low or middle-income countries. This means the effective management of age-related conditions such as frailty is ever increasing global importance.

特刊:Cognitive neuroscience and artificial intelligence

期刊: BMC Neuroscience

客座编辑:Zhiyi Chen & Ali Yadollahpour

BMC Neuroscience is calling for submissions to our Collection on cognitive neuroscience and AI, which aims to promote the integration of knowledge and advances in both fields. The  ultimate goal of the Collection is advancing our understanding of human cognition and developing more sophisticated AI systems, and will cover a range of topics that lie at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience and AI, including but not limited to: neural network models of cognition, deep learning algorithms for neuroimaging data, brain-computer interfaces, and cognitive architectures for artificial intelligence.

特刊:Minimal residual disease

期刊:Scientific Reports

客座编辑:William Cho, Muhammad J. A. Shiddiky & Hirofumi Yamamoto

Minimal residual disease, also referred to as measurable residual disease or MRD, is the term used to describe cancerous cells that remain in patients following cancer treatment. MRD cells can be unresponsive or resistant to the therapy and, therefore, monitoring for their presence assists physicians in determining treatment efficacy and predicting the probability of disease relapse. MRD detection is performed by a variety of methods, including flow cytometry, qPCR and next generation sequencing. This Collection welcomes submissions focussing on developments in MRD detection methodology including RNA, DNA and cellular diagnostics; epidemiological studies investigating MRD; and research focussed towards the identification of novel MRD biomarkers.

特刊:Soil microbiome

期刊:Scientific Reports

客座编辑:Abdullah Mohammed Al-Sadi, Saurabh Gangola & Milko Alberto Jorquera

The abundant and interacting communities of bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, and viruses found within soils are collectively referred to as the soil microbiome. They form one of the most diverse and dynamic ecosystems on the planet. The soil microbiome plays key environmental and ecological roles, from nutrient cycling, protection of plants against biotic (e.g., pathogens) and abiotic (e.g., extreme heat) stressors, maintaining soil physical structure, to carbon storage and bioremediation. However, human activities have led to substantial land degradation and hindered the soil microbiome’s capacity to provide essential ecosystem services. Each location will have a unique soil microbiome and it is important to understand how this influences, and how it is influenced by, the local and global ecosystem.
