霍乱是一种肠道感染，如果不进行治疗就会迅速死亡。这种疾病是由霍乱弧菌引起的，这种细菌占据了小肠，并产生可引发呕吐和腹泻，导致严重的脱水，每年全世界有21,000至143,000人死于霍乱。在追踪2010年海地爆发的霍乱弧菌菌株的遗传起源之后，Waldor及其同事意识到，自从现有霍乱疫苗使用以来，细菌在数十年中发生了显著的变化。为了寻找更为有效的方法，Waldor和他的同事发现了被称为HaitiV疫苗的独特能力：它几乎可以立即保护兔子免受导致霍乱的细菌的感染。转化医学所描述的这种效应表明，该疫苗将会有效遏制霍乱的快速蔓延。

兔子的实验表明，速效霍乱疫苗可在一天内开始防止致命疾病的发生。霍华德休斯医学研究所（HHMI）的研究人员Matthew Waldor称，这种速效疫苗能够提供的快速保护、能够在一天内控制霍乱疫情的蔓延。研究人员尚未在人们身上测试该疫苗，但布莱根妇女医院的微生物学家沃尔多尔对该疫苗持乐观态度：“我们认为这将是一种非常好的疫苗，并且可以在单剂量后诱导免疫力”。
