尽管T-bet+ IEL前体有更成熟的“IEL-样”表型，主要的迁出IEL前体是PD-1+，并且表达整合素α4β7。两种IEL前体都能植根于肠道，并在此表达CD8αα，而且由于PD-1+ IEL前体细胞群下调PD-1表达，并增加T-bet表达，来源于两个前体细胞群的细胞在肠道环境中很难被普通标记物区分开。这项研究调和了之前报道的IEL前体在表型和MHC限制性的多样性问题，此外也揭示了之前IEL前体发育和功能中未知的方面，这些信息将为了解CD8αα IEL提供基础。
